The thirteenth Valley and Views will be held on Sunday 28th April 2013. There will again be three distances of 42, 26 and 10 kms following footpaths and bridleways with short distances on quiet country roads. A full route description will be provided for each route. The walks follow the Welland Valley with some great views across Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Rutland. The long route is recognised as a demanding walk whilst the short route (and the new introductory route) is suitable for anyone, but not for pushchairs. Entrants come from all over Britain and the continent and there is always a good friendly atmosphere at the Village Hall which has full facilities and even a bar. An all day breakfast is available for a small charge.
There are checkpoints on the long and middle routes, one of which provides hot drinks and sandwiches.
New for this year, as well as the three distances already mentioned, we will offer an introductory stroll for those wishing to try walking with us for the first time. The walk is suitable for all ages and you can do as little or as much as you like. You can walk any distance, up to a maximum of six kilometres (about 4 miles), but unfortunately it is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. There is some rough walking – but not too much. The route has no roads and you will be provided with clear written instructions. You cannot get lost – come and try it and surprise yourself how easy it is to enjoy a walk in the country especially with small children; particularly in the beautiful Welland Valley. This introductory stroll is free to all and you can have a free cup of tea or coffee before you go and when you return – and you can buy an all-day breakfast for a small charge!!
Starting times are 7.30 to 9 a.m. for the longest route, 7.30 to 11 a.m. for the middle route and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the short and introductory routes. The cost is £1.00 for all entrants on the short route and £4.00 for the long and middle, with a £1.00 reduction for Waendel Walkers Club members. There is no charge for 5 year-olds and under; 16 year-olds and under pay £2.50 for the long and middle routes. As previously stated the introductory stroll is free of charge!
You can enter on the day – just turn up, register, collect a route description and go. Remember there is no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing. If the weather is sunny, remember the hat, drink and sunscreen. If it is wet bring the waterproofs and umbrella! Wear suitable shoes, trainers or boots. If bringing the dog, remember to keep it under control and on a lead when walking through the countryside, particularly amongst livestock.
The route is all on OS Landranger (1:50k) map 141. If you use OS Explorer (1:25k) maps you will need 233, 234 and 224. As with any of our walks you will be provided with written route instructions issued on the day and detailed rote maps will also be displayed around the hall
If you would like to save time at the check in you might like to download the registration form and complete it before you arrive
